What is email encryption?

Email encryption is a good way to protect your email content from being accessed by others instead of the recipient. The email is unreadable unless you have the “key” to decrypt it. Usually, only the recipient of the email has this key.

This key is called “private key”. Email encryption works with “private key” and “public key”, also known as Public Key Infrastructure (PKI). The public key is used to encrypt emails.

Common types of email encryption

S/MIME and PGP/MIME are the two common types of email encryption. The former is used most often because it is built into large web-based email companies such as Apple and Outlook. S/MIME relies on a centralized trust model.

The latter relies on a decentralized trust model. This model offer’s more flexibility for users to encrypt their emails. PGP/MIME is also quite easy to use. But you need a third-party encryption tool to implement.

S/MIME and PGP/MIME are two main types of encryption you need to know. If you want to try other types of encryption like Identity-based encryption, Mail session encryption and TLS, you can choose one according to your circumstances.

In addition, you can use RitaVPN to protect your online traffic.
